The cakes have a certain sophisticated simplicity with patterns sometimes blending into the overall colour scheme or sometimes bursting forth dramatically - like a bouquet of flowers - but in a grouping or angle that complements the rest of the cake.
Thomson prepares “gourmet homemade" cakes. So not only do the cakes have a definite upscale look to them, they are about as genuine a cake as you’re going to get.
“I make all my cakes from scratch, she says. ”I don’t use any mixes which is what a lot of decorators do. So my cakes are a lot heavier than most. They’re rich and moist.”
Thomson’s business is called Silver Spoon Cakes. She has been running it since 2007.
Most of her sales are in wedding cakes. She has had a booth at the fall wedding show at the Caboto Club, which has generated sales.
Thomson never took any formal cake preparation or decorating courses at a college.
“My mom basically taught me baking and the basics,” she says.
From there she taught herself through books and taking a couple of cake decorating classes at Michaels arts and crafts store.
Since she doesn’t have a shop customers contact her by e-mail or phone. She’ll then meet them at a coffee shop and talk over designs.
Sure, she says, she’d like to open a store.
“I’d love to open a little cupcake or cake cafe,” she says. “And I’d have wedding cakes also as an option.”
But for now, she works out of her family’s big white house on Felix Ave., sometimes getting help from her mom and her – count –‘em – 11 siblings.
