Chrysler Greenway's exemplary safety (con't)
“Not really,” Money said when asked if there have ever been criminal or violent incidents along the trail, which is officially in use from dawn to dusk.
“I’ve never had any reports of anybody being mugged or anything like that in the Greenway, ever, so I take that (people) are fairly safe.”
Nor, Money said, have there been any emergencies, such as people suffering heat exhaustion or stumbling and injuring themselves.
“I’ve never heard of any reports of that.”
However, he said, when out on the trail himself one time, someone told him about an incident where a woman slightly hurt herself.
“This woman lost her balance and fell off her bike and skinned her knees,” he said.
Money says occasionally ERCA staff will hear about an incident like that.
“But there are no dire strait issues that we ever hear about.”
The Greenway has five entrances at which users can park their cars and embark on their walk, run or biking trek.
The entrances have gates restricting major vehicles.
But, said Money, gate keys are given to maintenance staff, as well as police and EMS so they can obtain quick access should an emergency occur.
”But they’ve never called me up and said, ‘Oh, we were on the Greenway last weekend because.’”
The biggest problems with Greenway use?
Occasional ATV riders.
Said Money: “We still do get some people who don’t follow the rules.
“We do get occasional complaints of ATVs out on our Greenways.”
And dogs.
“I get a couple of complaints per year about people not keeping their dogs on leashes.”
The Greenway is one of two rail corridors converted to trails.
The other is the newer Amherstburg-Essex Greenway.
But only six of 26 km of that trail have been completed as ERCA awaits additional money to extend it.
