Sumptuous leisurely Grosse Isle (con't)

The island - actually there are 12 islands but the “Main” island is where people live and shop - is almost 10 square miles.

Grosse Isle has a number of two-lane roads, perfect for a leisurely drive to look at the beautiful homes and the Detroit River.

It’s fun to look back at Canada and see Amherstburg across the way. “Yes, I see General Chemical! There’s Fort Malden!”

What’s wonderful about the island are the large summer homes, many built earlier last century.

They have a rustic elegance to them. Many were the homes of auto executives and other titans of Detroit industry.

About a dozen homes in the Jewell Colony subdivision are listed in the Michigan Register of Historic Places.

Fearing rapid development the township created its Open Space Program, preserving environmentally sensitive land.

There are several hiking trails.

But Grosse Isle also has a commercial section, with grocery store, a few small shops, bars and restaurants.

The island, with a population of just over 10,000, has a high school and its own airport.

Grosse Isle.

Many of us have been looking at it all our lives. Now it’s time to get in the car and visit.
