Wine aerators the new decanters? (con't)

Newish bottle aerators might be for those who don’t want to pour all their wine into a decanter if they’re not going to drink it right away.

Or it might be because for other reasons.

“It’s not as time consuming,” Carnahan said.

“People in general are not as patient anymore.”

It's not that old fashioned decanters are especially expensive.

“You can get a good decanter for $10,” Carnahan said.

Aerators have especially come on the scene over the past half decade, and are made of glass or acrylic, fitted on to the top of the bottle.

They mix air (oxygen) with the wine as it flows out, causing aeration.

Carnahan said another reason decanters might be shunned is because the process “intimidates some people” when it’s “actually quite easy.”

After all, how difficult can it be to pour liquid from a store bought bottle into a fancy glass flask?

As well, she said, some people might shun decanters because of a “pretension” effect.

Carnahan said many cheaper wines on the market probably don’t have to be aerated anyway.

“Some wines are just meant to be drunk tonight and they don’t have sediment - they’re ready.”

Others, such as ones people might store for aging, should be decanted.

“Some are unfiltered and they say so on the label, so those are dead giveaways that need decanting,” she said.

She said aerators might have caught on with people who shun being stereotyped as fussy wine lovers (oenophiles) because of the snob factor.

“I know people that are eager to start a wine collection or they’re getting more involved in discovering different wines, trying to learn a bit more,” Carnahan said.

“I think they’re going to go for those little gadgets.”
