For organic and gourmet, there is also Trader Joe's, with several locations in the Detroit area.
In Canada the closest Whole Foods are in the Greater Toronto Area.
Anyone who has been to the newest Whole Foods – the first major grocery chain to invest in Detroit’s inner city in decades - can often see the odd Ontario licence plate in the busy parking lot.
Allison Phelps, spokeswoman for Whole Foods’ Midwest office in Chicago, said the store in Detroit’s Midtown neighbourhood is attracting Canadian customers from throughout southwestern Ontario.
“Our Midtown Detroit store does a great flow of customers from Windsor and as far away as London,” she said.
The store opened last summer to much fanfare in a growing neighbourhood just north of downtown, adjacent to Detroit’s sprawling Detroit Medical Center campus.
Some Michigan products are also available in the store.
And there are Detroit touches, such as outside wall murals by local artists and car metal as table tops in the in store eating area.
There is also sit down and take out from the store’s robust deli counter and pizza stand.
Phelps said no actual surveys were done to determine how many Canucks are crossing the border to shop organically or upscale.
But “our team members are very friendly and talk to the customers as they shop and when they check out.”
Maybe they heard the telltale “eh.”
The store is located at the corner of Mack and John R. a block east of Woodward Ave.
It’s open seven days a week 8 am to 10 pm.
