Shoppers' mini groceries (con't)
The chain’s spokeswoman Lisa Gibson says Shoppers has featured this “enhanced food offering” since 2003.But the concept “has evolved” and larger stores are seeing sizable grocery sections that are more spaciously laid out with miniature aisles, aping a standard grocery store. That compares to smaller size drug stores where the food section might be along the far wall or tucked into a back corner. In fact, she said, this has “become a standard” with Shoppers’ stores built since 2008. Shoppers is targeting both traditional drug store customers and those who want the convenience of grocery, often one and the same. Gibson said the chain is offering the products to its “time-starved” customers. Retail analyst John Winter agreed the concept targets those who might pop into the drug store at the end of the day to get their prescription filled, notice the obvious grocery area, and “pick up some food items” on their way home to dinner. Winter said consumers pay for the convenience with prices likely at “the higher end of the spectrum.” He said “presumably” Shoppers can make a profit though “I’ve been in those stores many times and I’ve never seen people shopping for food but I may be there at the wrong time.” WindsorOntarioNews.com
