Once again, U of W takes advantage of students (continued)
doubt feel the decision is another example of how the university takes them for granted. Parking at the U traditionally has been a headache, despite the fact students pay $343 or $8 a day in parking fees. This decision follows the 18-day strike in the fall of 2008 at which students were deprived of classes by what many consider a pampered faculty who originally rejected a 14 per cent raise over three years in a city mired in unemployment. This is on top of the fact the Government of Ontario’s annual “sunshine” list of public employees making over $100,000 had close to 300 people at the U making that amount, ten making more than $200,000 – the most of any public sector organization in the area. Meanwhile in the most recent Globe and Mail Canadian University Report, which asks students to rate their universities, in 19 categories U of W ranked at the lowest or next-to-lowest including for Student Services and Campus Atmosphere. As students angered about the parking changes say, faculty members still have convenient parking. The university has added some spaces and there are probably some far-flung spots that can be found. But it misses the point. Way before the engineering school came along the administration should have planned for improved parking, such as one or more parking structures. With this latest decision the students seem to have lost out again.
