Matty has a point (con't)

president Matty Maroun one point. He’s right when he says he is the victim of unfair competition. Maroun is a businessman and has invested in bridge improvements with his own money. His proposed new bridge would also be paid out of his own pocket without taxpayer funds. The DRIC bridge presents unfair competition because it’s a creation of the public sector. This entire process has been planned and supervised by government. Sure, if a private company is found to invest in and operate the bridge alongside government (the proposed P3 plan) that introduces some level of competition. But there would still be public involvement and the entire project swaddled in government planning and control. Maroun’s vocal critics – virtually everyone from politicians to the labour movement to civic activists to the media – might resent a private businessman operating an international crossing (as Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley wrote, “For years, I've asked how that is possible.”). And there’s no question the bridge is a cash cow for, well, a capitalist who wants to make money. If the DRIC bridge truly was a private endeavour – and you can bet that will never happen – Maroun wouldn’t have an argument. That would be honest competition. But the way DRIC is structured the process is far from it.
