Clinic should have seen opposition (con't)
residents who worry that unsavoury characters (whether ex-cons or drug addicts) will sully their neighbourhood by loitering, approaching children or committing new crimes, not to mention the potential long-term drop in homeowners’ property values. When public meetings are held for far less controversial issues like expanding parking lots, it’s amazing no residents of Lincoln Rd. were informed beforehand that this clinic was setting up shop. Also incredible is the fact that clinic organizers couldn’t find a more suitable location. Apparently zoning restrictions in industrial areas was one of the problems. What!? City planning staff, who are updating the city’s official plan, have recently proposed concentrating new commercial development in existing industrial zones, where all kinds of abandoned properties exist, rather than building new sites and creating suburban sprawl. This clinic was a prime candidate for one of those inner city or “brownfield” sites. So why didn’t planning staff work with clinic officials to find one of those locations? Many players dropped the ball on this one.
